The
Eastmont Digital Griots En-route -- to College! (EDGE) Program has been
funded as part of the UC Office of the President's Community Education
& Resource Centers (CERC).
The goal of CERC is to assist youth in disadvantaged and diverse
communities to become more motivated and academically prepared to enter
college.
EDGE is a digital storytelling class for middle and high school
students that combines training in filmmaking, writing, and critical
thinking leading to preparation of an effective personal statement for
college admission.
EDGE is offered at the Eastmont Computing Center in East Oakland to
groups of 8 to 10 students per 40-hour session, with instruction by a PhD
student from UC's Graduate School of Education; an audiovisual expert from
UC's Interactive University Project; and two Eastmont Computing Center
staff.
Students are also introduced to UC Berkeley outreach services,
including Admissions and Financial Aid. EDGE sessions include
screenings of the students' films, attended by parents, other students,
teachers, and other interested community members.
Outstanding student graduates are encouraged to serve as mentors
and administrative assistants at subsequent EDGE sessions.
