Through a $2.4 million grant from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development's Office of University Partnerships, the UC Berkeley/Oakland Joint Community Development (JCD) Program became a remarkable partnership that made positive impacts and concrete changes in many of Oakland's most economically challenged neighborhoods.

The grant was one of five such awards to universities nationwide.  Partners from the university, the city and the community collaborated on many projects to enhance the capacity of local organizations and to improve the quality of life in Oakland neighborhoods.

Projects undertaken included:

designing and restoring two urban parks
training minority contractors
funding the construction of affordable homes and merchant façade improvements
bringing computers into Oakland Public Library branches and community-based organizations
carrying out environmental clean-up projects with Oakland youth
laying the foundation for a new credit union

For more detail on projects undertaken, please see our 24-page brochure: Strengthening Partnerships Between Oakland and the University (Adobe Acrobat required. PDF file size: 613K).
