|
BackgroundThe University/Oakland Metropolitan Forum was a cooperative effort among the University of California, the City of Oakland, its community based organizations, and four other East Bay higher education institutions including California State University at Hayward, Mills College, Holy Names College and Peralta Community College District. It was started as a joint initiative in 1986 by Chancellor Ira Michael Heyman of the University of California, Berkeley, and the late Lionel Wilson, Mayor of Oakland. It was formally established as a program of the Institute of Urban and Regional Development (IURD), an interdisciplinary campuswide research unit. MissionThe Forum's mission has been to mobilize the intellectual and academic resources of its participating institutions in service to the city and people of Oakland and its neighboring communities. ActivitiesOver the years, the Forum's activities ranged from convening citywide leadership groups to evaluating major city initiatives, providing technical assistance, conducting research and implementing cooperative community projects. Topics included economic development, Internet application development, transit-oriented land use, neighborhood improvement, school quality and effectiveness, public housing assessment, fire protection planning, urban design, urban parks, and environmental restoration. This work was supported over the years by grants and contracts from foundations and from federal, state, and city agencies and, since 1995, by temporary support in the form of matching funds from UC Berkeley.
