IURD develops and supports interdisciplinary research and practical work that helps scholars and students to understand how cities and regions work, while helping public and private agencies, nations, states, and communities to undertake more effective policies.  As urbanization has rapidly increased around the world and with it problems of housing, sprawl, transportation, environmental quality, urban poverty and physical decline, the demand for IURD's work has steadily increased. Since its inception, the work of IURD has always been rooted first and foremost in the social sciences, whether it involves predicting the consequences of growth policy or the effectiveness of earthquake preparedness.  IURD provides a research home and support to faculty who initiate their own projects.
